What is Evolution?

Biological evolution is change in the characteristics of living organisms over generations. Evolutionary theory argues that all the organisms alive on earth today share a common ancestor.

A simple way to think of evoulution is "descent with modification".

  • It is change over generations
  • The development of something into something completly different.

Scientific Theory VS. Theory of Evolution

A scientific theory starts out as a hypothesis, an educated guess, then the hypothesis is subjected to testing. Many scientific theories are so well-established that no new evidence is likely to alter them substantially. For example, no new evidence will demonstrate that the Earth does not orbit around the sun (heliocentric theory), or that living things are not made of cells (cell theory). Like these other foundational scientific theories, the theory of evolution is supported by so many observations and confirming experiments that scientists are confident that the basic components of the theory will not be overturned by new evidence. Like all scientific theories, the theory of evolution is subject to continuing refinement as new areas of science emerge or as new technologies enable observations and experiments that were not possible previously.

Natural Selection

Natural Selection is the process by which forms of life having traits that better enable them to adapt to specific environmental pressures, as predators, changes in climate, or competition for food or mates, will tend to survive andreproduce in greater numbers than others of their kind, thus ensuring the perpetuation of those favorabletraits in succeeding generations.

In other words, natual selection is when species have to adapt to their background in order to survive longer and reproduce.

Still a little confused, watch this quick little video to get a better understanding of natural selection.

To clear up any qusetions you might still have click on the following link and than A birds eye view of natual selection. Once you get to the end play the short game!
